The Fruita Police Department's Canine Unit is a proactive effort by the F.P.D. to better serve the community and the Grand Valley. the K-9 Unit consists of a German Shepard (Anno) and a handler. Both are profesionally trained in all aspects of police canine activity. Anno is trained to locate, search buildings, open areas, and control and apprehend criminal suspects. Anno also recognizes four narcotic odors and is a valuable tool is searching for illegal drugs.
Anno's training was done in the Grand Valley in cooperation with the Grand Junction Police K-9 Division. Sgt C. Yaws (trainer) provided all the training on her off duty time and at no cost to the Fruita Police Department.
The K-9 unit is a very valuable tool in community relations. The team makes random visits to Fruita Monument High School at the request of the principle and the School Resource Officer. The visits are an attempt to show the students that the school and the Fruita Police Department are actively pursuing a drug free environment for them.
The K-9 team is available to assist the Fruita Police and other agencies not only while on duty but on a "call out" basis as well. The team has eagerly worked in joint effort with Mesa County Sheriff's Department, Colorado State Patrol, and the Colorado Port of Entry when requested.
